An Open Proposal for the Creation of a Universal Exchange of Ideas

I wanted to alert everyone to a open source project that should be of great interest to those interested in fostering the growth of commons-based peer production.

My original intent was to develop a new way of conducting ad hoc brainstorming sessions across the Internet. But early last year, I had an epiphany that has lead me on a long exploration of theories and arguments ranging from the economics of information to cultural evolution. I now believe that what I’ve discovered has implications that go well beyond commercial interests of the Internet and into the realms of democratic discourse, cultural production, and global social consciousness. If I am correct, then the implications of my concept are enormous.

It would mean a great deal to me and to those interested in helping me move this forward if you could take a moment to review what I’ve posted online at www.ideologi.com (pronounced “ideology”). There you will find a brief proposal for the creation of what is best described as a universal exchange of ideas. This may sound like an overstatement, but I hope that you’ll find that this is a fair description of what I’ve devised. While some may read it as the primer for an ad hoc peer production portal, others will identify it as a collaborative tool for smart mobs or a gaming service for all sorts of creative “coopetitions.” As you will see, they’re all correct.

Because of its potential for stimulating (and focusing) political, cultural, and economic discourse, I have changed my original direction of building a for-profit portal and have decided to start an open source Internet project in the same vein as the Wikimedia Foundation. The key diference, however, would be that ideologi would be able to fund itself by assisting by acting as a trust for the myriads of individuals who choose to collectively create intellectual property to be licensed commercially to private interests.

Very interesting site. Yet, from looking at it the functionality is hard to understand. Is it a Wiki, can anybody contribute, how? I am suffering from impatience and it took me too long to figure what I can do on the site…..

    Fair enough, Christian.

Phase One was to get feedback as to what people think. Based on the feedback that I’ve receiving (and solicited), it looks like no one can think of a reason why it wouldn’t work. That says a lot, if you consider that no one has ever conceptualized a system like this before. Phase Two involves prototyping a lite version of the system so that groups can try it for themselves. Since this is an open source project, think of the blog as a public notice about the concept to start discussions. Strangely, the only complaints I have received is why it’s not being built. ;-)

If you know of anyone who wants to help us develop it, the basic model is here for them to review. If they want to do this on their own, that’s fine, too. Jsut so long that they honor the Creative Commons license posted at the bottom of http://www.ideologi.com. The general idea is that a UEI (universal exchange of ideas) becomes a protocol for systems and services that incorporate this idea.

When the first 100 testers see how fast it is to realize the greatest idea amongst them or how easy it is come to consensus on any general topic, a hundred lightbulbs are going to go off in heads about the true meaning of ideologi.

Until then, I am here to answer any question anyone has about ideologi.
