Research on Competitive Strategy and Open Business
I’m a senior lecturer in business information systems at the Australian National University and I’m currently writing a research paper on competitive strategy and open business models.
I’m working on developing theory and a list of requirements and caveats for firms engaging in open approaches to business. My problem is that I am having difficulty finding firms that are experimenting with such strategies. What I’m looking for are, preferably, non IT firms (for example, a plant nursery that gives away seeds and makes additional revenue from gardening advice).
If any firms or individuals would like to discuss this, I would love to hear from them.

Well it might be great if you could be more specific about your research interests and list some examples
A contact address – email! – would also be helpful, just in case somebody wants to contact you.
And: since you are an academic. Have you ever thought of yourself as a business model? You gives lots away for free, with the hope to increase your reputation in order to achieve what? The objective truth, wisdom? Some might argue that giving away an article, idea or even a whole book serves to increase attention and reputation of yourself, and they are deeply correlated concepts, which are a form of indirect revenue. And only the most altruistic minded academics will argue that the sole incentive is enlighnment and wisdom, or a competition of the minds? Its a question of balance and timing: usually you invest first in education, then you publish, teach in lowly paid positions and then when you are older you enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you explore this chain of thought further you can apply the analytical model – giving something away first, cashing in later – throughout humanity and history. Why would kids spend time in school otherwise? I certainly haven’t been paid for it.
Oops, looks like the email address didn’t come through in my original post – it’s Sigi.GoodeREMOVETHIS@anu.edu.au .
