Joi Ito at 22C3: Open Networks, New Business Models

Chaos Computer ClubIn his keynote address at the 22nd Chaos Communications Congress in Berlin, Germany, Joi Ito spoke about the high-stake priority of preserving the Internet as an open network and the implications of losing this resource. Furthermore, he pressed for an opposition to the rise of global monopolies that has been facilitated by an increasingly networked society; they inhibit creative and collaborative development, lead to technology and content lock-in and are difficult to regulate due to ambiguous global jurisdiction, he said and added that instead, “we have to experiment with new business models.”

The video of his speech and the opening of the congress (Europe’s largest conference on hacking and civil issues of technology) is now available (wmv), as well as a valuable follow-up interview with Ito by the Chaos Congress Radio. The directory of all congress recordings can be found here.

Just prior, the BBC also carried a relevant article related to Ito’s concerns in speaking with Internet law professor Michael Geist, Univ. of Ottawa: Towards a two-tier internet – The egalitarian nature of the internet is under threat.
