SMS Sugar Man – the future is here!

Take 2 mobile phones, a small group of actors, a dash of improvisational acting and what do you get? If you answered: one full-length movie, you would be right!

Aryan Kaganof (formerly known as Ian Kerkhof) a South African film-maker with guts and genius, has created SMS Sugar Man, the first-ever full length movie using high quality cell-cam technology. For the naysayers who are already jumping up and down in their seats crowing “Quality! Quality!” rest assured that the movie has been tested on 35-mm film and the verdict pronounced is: perfect clarity, fantastic quality. How many mobile phones would it take to make this possible? Well, as it turns out, only two. Kaganof used two Sony Ericcsson W900i mobile phones.

And building upon this innovative use of technology, Kaganof and DV8, the production house responsible for the movie, will be using innovative distribution methods. When the movie is released in May this year, it will be made available across a wide variety of media platforms in a very short space of time, from DVD, internet, mobile (or cell) phone, TV and cinema.

Another cool aspect is that the movie will create what anthropologists refer to as the leapfrog effect, where developing nations take technology and adapt it in new ways to suit their needs, inadvertently overtaking the developed world.

When the Sony Ericcsson W900i cell-phone becomes available on the South African market in the next few months, guess what they will come with? A pre-packaged trailer of SMS Sugar Man, of course.
