Arts Survey Findings
The survey conducted as part of the OpenBusiness.cc project focuses on new media arts and copyright; art forms that thrive in the open environment provided by the internet. This survey combines qualitative and quantitative data to examine the motivations behind using a Creative Commons licence and the impacts of using such a licence for an artist.
The key questions of the survey are:
- Why would artists use Creative Commons Licences in relation to some of their work?
- What political reasons do the artists have, if any, for using CC licensing?
- Whether artists believe that use of open licensing can become part of an art practice that creates revenue for the artist?
- What do artists believe the role of the open licencing is in assisting with the creation of that income?
- Where do artists believe Creative Commons licencing sits in relation to other forms of copyright licensing, distribution and methods of business?
- What understanding do artists have of the different “some rights reserved” licences Creative Commons offers?
Responses were emailed directly to the OpenBusiness Team and Statistics are automatically generated as the survey is filled in. This allowed the research team to quickly create pools of responses and to gather some quantitative details through the survey itself to support the qualitative data it gathers
