My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

brian.jpgThis seminal 1981 work by Brian Eno and David Byrne is being re-released for 2006 in a distinctly ‘open’ fashion. I won’t claim to be familiar with the original, although friends tell me it is truly wondrous and testimonies to its influence are both deep and broad. The new version has been re-mastered, re-artworked and comes with previously unreleased tracks from the original studio sessions. Value aplenty.
Of more interest to our perspective, they’ve built a website where fans can download the complete 24-track recordings for 2 of the songs, which “in line with Creative Commons licenses, you are free to edit, remix, sample and mutilate”. New works can be uploaded to the site and made available for other users, there’s even a section to upload visual works inspired by the original recordings. Sweet.

The terms and conditions are however somewhat baffling, a quick read reveals two licences; one from Virgin / Warners, and then the CC-BY-NC-SA. How do these relate to each other?

Certainly impressive to see CC licenses being used in this progressive way by major players, which can only encourage the dissemination of the underlying ideas.
