Towards global digital commons
Open Democracy is running forums and articles on the digital commons ahead of the iCommons Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where OpenBusiness will talk about “Commercial Commons” and how business within a free and open media environment can happen.
And iCommons is having an interesting post on how the news business can survive in an open, interconnected, digital world, where citizens become journalists. OpenBusiness will report from the summit during the next days. So if you read OB frequently stay tuned as stories come in from entrepreneurs around the world, who understand the balance between the parameters of OpenBusiness: they all strike subtle balances between free, open, and some forms of closed business strategies….Tomorrow we will start reporting…..

Particularly interesting article by David M Berry – ‘The global digital commons and other unlikely tales ‘ – strong criticism of iCommons > “busy writing national licences and patching them together into a global system that raises more questions than answers”. Berry applauds Lessig, Boyle and co. for seeking an alternative approach to cultural dissemination (i.e. other than that developed by the corporations), but questions the export of an approach built on US IP regulations, suggesting a debate from the fundaments is what’s really needed to avoid further privatisation of culture.
