Discover a Crowdsourcing initiative – CrowdSpirit Part V

logo_crowdspirit.gif5.When CrowdSpirit will be launched ? and remaining Q&A..

We are planning to officially launch the service by the summer 2007. You may think that this is a long delay but it’s important for us to make sure that we have the best community platform to fulfill our needs. Moreover, this platform will have to interact with all our partners who will have different requirements from the community.

In terms of the first product launch, it’s extremely difficult to give a reliable timeline. Our dream is to offer the products to the community for next Christmas, wouldn’t that be nice ;-) but we will have to be realistic and we’re more thinking about a realistic timeline for summer 2008.

That’s it, I hope that you enjoyed the information for this week. Do not hesitate to ask question, this is you last chance for this week ;-)

  1. [...] Here is our last article of this very interesting week on openbusiness.cc. I’d like to thank Hannah and the Openbusiness team for having offered me the opportunity to share my ideas on their website. FYI, it’s not too late to ask your last question on this blog [...]

Thanks Lionel for the excellent posts

So some more questions: how are you going to finance the platform developemnt and launch? And more crucually how and when will u start building a community?

    Cheers

Hello Christian, thanks for the great comment, that’s very nice. To answer your first question and based on our current Business plan, we will start financing the first developments of the platform by our own private funds until the first formal business angels investments scheduled for mid of this year.

Regarding the community question, somehow we have already started building a community of interested beta users which is above our expectations. Then for the next steps, we will rely on the “buzz” effect ;-) which is working fine for the moment.

    Best regards

Are the designs that come out of this project going to be Free?

    all the best,

Hello Zotz, I’m totally sure to understand what do you mean by “Free” but as far as I understood, if you’re talking about Intellectual Properties, we’re currently working on all that aspects and our strategy is to let people have access to the maximun of information. Somehow a kind of “opensource” for hardare but the commercial use will be strictly restricted to avoid loose of revenue for the community. Hope it help a little bit

    Best regards

    Lionel,

free as in GPL or BSD or Creative Commons BY-SA or BY.

“Somehow a kind of “opensource” for hardare but the commercial use will be strictly restricted to avoid loose of revenue for the community.”

From that I would take it as not free and not even really like open source. Sounds more like CC BY-NC or others with NC.

    all the best,

You’re right, we’re more thinking about Creative Commons NC so Non-Commercial Use. This is still under discussion but we think that it will better for the community in order to avoid loosing revenue. Anyway, if the community think that we have to apply GPL licence, we will have to think about this alternative. Our business model is very flexible.

I understand the “community thinking” but I think having a long term exclusive community attitude might actually hurt in the long term.

Putting aside my dislike of NC for a multitude of reasons, one thought is to have NC for a set amount of time or a set amount of “revenue/profit” after which the works move from NC to BY-SA.

Certainly NC would not qualify as Free or Open Source in the software world.

    Thoughts?

    all the best,
