MiniBar This Friday

Its MiniBar o’clock again. We just got a nice review of the last one. I like the first line in particular: “Imagine taking the idea of the Comedy Club and getting geeks to run it instead. Voil� – the Mini-bar!”

“MiniBar was launched in December last year by an enterprising team comprised of Christian Ahlert, Simon Worthington, Jamie King and Hannah Upritchard, a group that has managed to herd hundreds of techies hungry for the The Next Big Thing into a bar merely by persuading sponsors to provide free beer.

Each ‘stand-up’ gets a short slot (3-5 minutes) and a laptop geared up for what is basically a hit-tech slide show to present their start-up. Normally these ideas are actually going concerns, rather than being simply ‘vapour-ware’. For the audience it’s a chance to glean a snap shot of small showcase developments and maybe even heckle a few when you can’t hear them. Audio, Internet TV and new media are hot on the scene and the even briefer Q&A sessions are often heralded by bellows of “COPYRIGHT!”, signalling that technical applications tread on dangerous ground where intellectual property and creators’ rights are overlooked.(…)
