Service/product description

The computer company allow users to interact with the iPhone API and submit their own created applications for downloading on their App Store.

What does 'openness' mean in this case?

By letting users interact with the open workings of the iPhone, users can create their own applications which can then be redistributed freely, subject to consideration.

    Wow. Just, wow. I can’t believe Apple’s App Store is being called “Open”.

    Arbitrary, opaque procedures that decline apps on grounds other than “Dangerous to end users” are the opposite, the antithesis, of Open Access to Developers. Particularly when their only consistent ban on developers is anything competing with their built-in suite of software. Microsoft were charged over a Billion for Antitrust for the same thing only a little while ago, and Apple is being lauded as “Open” because of it.

    Added to this their exclusive contracts, the lock-in with the iTunes software, the inability to run native code or otherwise use your device as you intend.. the list goes on. The iPhone is the most tightly closed platform I’ve ever experienced as a user.

    This site is ridiculous.

    I largely agree with your criticisms but this site is open for anyone to make their nominations of their favourite open organizations – you should make your own that will be lauded as more open than Apple’s App store.

  3. Damian says:

    @Cathal

    Anyone can submit the nominations, not really the site’s fault…

  4. Michi says:

    Sorry, but all Apple-Products are completely clösed.
    There is nothing more open than Microsoft.
    Everyone can develop Software for MS or Apple or Linux.
    What the hack is there Open?
    Thats a farce, i mean.
