Google is most prominently known as the search engine and advertising giant within the web and tech industry. However, they are also known for developing useful web tools (such as Google Mail, Docs, Analytics and many more) and software (such as Google Chrome, Google Earth).

What does 'openness' mean in this case?

One of their biggest projects undergoing development currently is called Google Wave. It is a collaboration tool where multiple users are capable of creating/editting/publishing a single post entry. It has opened its doors to user-made APIs, making this already powerful tool even more customizable. With Google Wave, user generated content is highly encouraged, and serves as a great platform to do so.
