I don’t know how succesful it is but they’re clearly quite serious about IP and being responsible with it.

Distance Lab is a creative research organisation bringing together digital media technology, design and the arts to redefine and overcome the disadvantages of distance in learning, health care, relationships, culture and other domains.

In addition to conducting academic research, the Lab works with briefs from industry and governmental partners, providing advice, generating ideas and building prototypes that inspire and can lead to new innovative products and services.

Oral Wiki is one of  many projects of Distance Lab.  The Oral Wiki is a phone-based wiki system. It was inspired by the need for a networking tool to strengthen informal justice systems in sub-Saharan Africa, where conventional screen-based Web 2.0 applications are not viable because of a lack of literacy and Internet availability. It could archive case results and facilitate information sharing between the informal and formal justice systems.

Emporis is a real estate data mining company. It is creating a database and imagebase of all buildings worldwide which have commercial or public interest, along with a platform for displaying this content to various types of users. An open community participates in the collection of data and images: this includes exterior photos, interior photos, and construction photos, and structural, architectural, descriptive, historical, financial, and company-related information.

For Emporis, it would not be possible to amass such an ambitious collection of information without an open community scattered around the world. Emporis has editors in 66 countries, thus allowing for field research that goes deeper than any existing sources. The community has a diverse range of interests – for example, some members are interested in industrial buildings, some in historical buildings, and some concentrate mainly on photos.

Google is most prominently known as the search engine and advertising giant within the web and tech industry. However, they are also known for developing useful web tools (such as Google Mail, Docs, Analytics and many more) and software (such as Google Chrome, Google Earth).

One of their biggest projects undergoing development currently is called Google Wave. It is a collaboration tool where multiple users are capable of creating/editting/publishing a single post entry. It has opened its doors to user-made APIs, making this already powerful tool even more customizable. With Google Wave, user generated content is highly encouraged, and serves as a great platform to do so.
