Akvo creates and shares internet and mobile phone tools that for the first time make it easy for everyone to reach out and fund thousands of new water and sanitation projects, in some of the poorest parts of the world. This is really important, because today 2.6 billion people lack sanitation facilities and 1.1 billion still can’t access safe drinking water. Fix this, and people climb out of poverty fast.

Akvo focuses on solving three problems through openness: – Open knowledge sharing. It runs www.akvopedia.org, an information portal designed to act as a “wikipedia for water”, which is open and free for all to use. – Find projects to fund, or find donors to fund your project. www.akvo.org is an online marketplace designed to scale to feature very large numbers of small-scale water and sanitation projects online, visible to

Catwalk Genius introduced the concept of ‘crowd-funding’ to the fashion industry. In short, anyone may buy shares in a new fashion collection. The funding collected is used to create a clothing range and the revenues from its sales are shared equally between designer, supporters and Catwalk Genius. Supporters are given perks in return for their support, such as signed design sketches or seats at a catwalk show.

They enable the public to decide democratically about the kind of fashion that gets made, as opposed to the fashion media. Any fashion designer with production capacity may join the scheme, although there is an approval stage to ensure the quality of their work.

CrowdSpirit is a platform connecting companies with innovators to help with the design of products and services. The innovators respond to challenges set forth by the companies. They can then be invited by the business to join the project and upon the project’s completion, the innovators are the first to use the innovative new product/service and may receive some other rewards as well.

Openness in this case is all about using your customers for input while developing new product/services. CrowdSpirit is a platform/facilitator that enables this process to happen. It’s crowdsourcing they use to find their consumers and it’s co-creation they apply for developing products/services together. Flickr is an image and video hosting website. In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers to host images they embed in blogs and social media.

Photo-sharing amongst users have become commonplace. Many people would take images and contributions from each other via Flickr profiles to decorate their own websites/blogs. It utilizes the power of the crowds to contribute content, and allows that content to be publicly viewed and distributed.
